The Inter-reformados association says it is “satisfied” with the announcement of a 75% reduction in public transport prices, in the municipality of Covilhã, for retirees aged 65 and over. The measure, which comes into force on June 1st, applies to social passes and pre-purchased tickets.

The announcement was made yesterday (25) by Vítor Pereira, president of the municipality, during the solemn session commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April.

“We remember that the 75% reduction responds to the demands presented by Inter-Reformados/Castelo Branco, the União dos Sindicatos de Castelo Branco (USCB/CGTP-IN) and the Association of Retired Pensioners and Elderly People of Covilhã (MURPI) and is the result of our negotiations with the City Council”, can be read in the press release.

Until now, the reduction was 50% on the price of the social pass and pre-purchased tickets. Now, this reduction will be 75%.

In practical terms, if a social pass cost 39 euros, the pensioner paid 19.50 euros and now pays 9.75 euros. If pre-purchased tickets cost 25.40 euros, the pensioner paid 12.70 euros and now pays 6.35 euros.

On a final note, Inter-reforamdos guarantees to “continue to demand and fight for free services”.

“The objective of Inter-Reformados/Castelo Branco continues to be completely free public transport for retired people and by the end of the year there will be new meetings to see if it can be implemented during the current mandate. But this is already an important victory for persistence, dialogue and negotiation”, highlights the association in the document.
