The Global Retirement Index was created to help people who are thinking about retiring abroad and need information. Released by the digital magazine International Living, the list describes itself as “the most comprehensive and in-depth research of its kind”.
Compiled from real-life opinions and experiences. To create the list, the Global Retirement Index relies on contributors who report their daily experiences in each location. The focus of the ranking is to address the possibility of living with a better quality of life and spending less money.
For the 2024 ranking, seven categories were used to determine the best places in the world to retire. They are: housing, visas and benefits, cost of living, affinity classification (adaptation), health, development and governance and, finally, climate.
The magazine clarifies, however, that the ranking is not intended to be a “scientific production”, as it was “designed to be a useful tool for people, built from real-world and local information, interpreted through the lens of informed experiences and opinions.”
