Steven Spielberg is considered the forefather of modern blockbuster cinema – and not without reason. Because long before Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones, he made history with the first summer blockbuster ever.

With Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), E.T. – The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Jurassic Park (1993), Steven Spielberg created some of the most famous blockbusters in cinema history – not to mention all the other masterpieces and classics for which he was also responsible. Calling him a master of great cinema is no exaggeration. However, the most important hit in the three-time Oscar winner’s career is the one from a few years earlier.

Jaws was the first summer blockbuster in cinema history. This is proven by both the Guinness World Records Institute and box office receipts: people once lined up around the block for the animal horror classic – making it the first film to gross more than $100 million at the American box office. And much more: in the end, it grossed over 266 million, and 476 million worldwide – which not only made it the most successful feature film of the mid-1970s, but also launched Spielberg’s directing career at a completely new point.

The suspense masterpiece is available in the Telecine catalogue.

“The Big Jaws Hoax”: 7 years before Spielberg’s film, this other one shocked the public with a big lie

Still considered the highlight of shark cinema, which has become increasingly popular in the recent past with Sharknado, Megatubarão and more. Steven Spielberg, at the time, was the indie hope, making him, above all, the most promising filmmaker in the dream factory. Above all, the rain of millions finally allowed him to stage great films. The rest is history.

Jaws: Perfect suspense cinema

Spielberg’s classic has lost none of its impact, even half a century after its release in cinemas – and although today it may no longer cause empty beaches, it continues to leave its audience sweaty. And this is certainly largely because fate was not initially kind to the production. But in the end, everything changed.

Due to technical problems, the animatronic shark, which was named Bruce (after Spielberg’s lawyer at the time, Bruce Ramer), did not work the way the filmmaker imagined. Filming was delayed several times because of this, so the director decided to use the animal to a lesser extent in his film. A very happy circumstance, as has been seen in retrospect.

In this way, the tension is gradually reversed, gradually revealing more and more of the great threat, which remains in the dark for a long time – and thus radiates an even greater danger. And when the monster first appears in all its glory, the moment is even more effective.

The work “Jaws: Memories from Martha’s Vineyard” is recommended to all fans of the film. The work of Matt Taylor is considered the definitive Jaws compilation and not only offers more than 300 pages full of interesting information about the film’s production and legacy, but also extensive exclusive insights in the form of numerous photographs.
