Lawyers for police chief Rivaldo Barbosa, investigated for planning the murder of Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes in 2018, asked the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for the civil police officer to testify in the case.
The accused, who headed the Rio de Janeiro police, has been in prison since March 24, and is being investigated for planning the murder of the councilor and for hindering the investigations.
According to a Federal Police report, he received “allowance” between R$60,000 and R$80,000, so as not to investigate murder crimes at the Rio de Janeiro Homicide Police Station. Investigations indicate that there was a routine of paying bribes.
In the request sent to Minister Alexandre de Moraes, the defense also requests that Erika Araújo, Rivaldo’s wife, be heard in the process.
She is accused of using companies to launder money resulting from crimes. Erika is also being investigated for criminal organization and passive corruption.
The lawyers claim that more than a month after his arrest, Rivaldo has still not been heard and there is no forecast for the testimony to take place. And they argue that with the declaration, the police officer could clarify, with the help of documentation and invoices, that he did not have shell companies.
In the petition sent to Moraes, the lawyers also cite Erika’s CV and argue that the measures against the lawyer be revoked.
