Who started for the NY Mets on Opening Day the most at each position?

These players had the most Opening Day starts for their position for the New York Mets.

After seven innings on Monday night at Citi Field, Luis Severino had the Mets on a no-hitter watch against the Cubs.

The Mets right-hander had used 79 pitches to get through seven innings while only allowing a two-out walk to the Cubs’ Ian Happ in the top of the fourth inning. He had struck out five in the process, while the Mets had carried a 1-0 lead on the strength of Brandon Nimmo’s leadoff home run off the Cubs’ Jameson Taillon.

But in the top of the eighth inning following a walk to Michael Busch, Dansby Swanson sent a jam-shot bloop single to center field to break up the no-hit bid. The tying run would score when defensive replacement Joey Wendle tried to turn a double play as Busch scampered home to make it 1-1 in the top of the eighth.

Otherwise, there hadn’t been much drama for Severino through the opening seven innings.

Christopher Morel nearly reached off Severino on a wide throw by Mark Vientos but Pete Alonso was able to keep his toe sliding across the base to record the out.

The Citi Field crowd booed former Mets prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong after he squared off for bunt in the sixth inning. He bunted the ball foul and then proceeded to ground out.

In the top of the seventh inning, Mike Tauchman was hit by a pitch before Pete Alonso knocked down a sharp ground ball from Happ with a runner on first base to record the first out of the seventh inning.

Then, Jeff McNeil doubled off Tauchman at second base on a looping line drive to the right side to end the inning. The double play meant Severino had faced one batter above the minimum through the opening seven frames.

The Mets have two no-hitters in club history: Johan Santana on June 1, 2012, and a combined no-hit effort from Tylor Megill, Drew Smith, Joely Rodriguez, Seth Lugo and Edwin Diaz.
