Chega calls for urgent hearing of Nuno Melo in Parliament

-

In the request presented in Parliament, to which SIC had access, André Ventura’s party expresses “deep concern” with the suggestion made by Nuno Melo.

For Chega, the proposal in question reveals “a simplistic and reductive view” of social and criminal problems and ignores “the fundamental principles that govern the Armed Forces and military service”.

“It is imperative to question the effectiveness and ethics of using military service and the Armed Forces, a fundamental institution of National Defense and representation of State sovereignty, as a means of social rehabilitation”, claims Chega, in the application.

The party considers that military service “should not be seen as a punitive mechanism or alternative to the juvenile justice system”.

For Chega, Nuno Melo’s proposal also raises “serious security questionsboth for the young people involved and for members of the Armed Forces”.

“The integration of individuals with a history of delinquency, without an adequate evaluation and monitoring process, can compromise the cohesion, morale and operational effectiveness of military units”, maintains the Chega parliamentary group.

André Ventura’s party therefore concludes that Nuno Melo must urgently go to the Assembly of the Republic “to provide clarifications on this proposal, its implications and the studies or analyzes that support it”.
