Civil Police arrest suspect in murder of lawyer and client in the interior of RN

Operation “Jus Puniendi” results in arrests after investigation of a crime that occurred in Santo Antônio

The Civil Police of Rio Grande do Norte arrested the suspect of executing lawyer Brenda Oliveira and her client, Janielson Nunes de Lima, in a coordinated action called “Jus Puniendi”. This operation, launched this Tuesday (April 30, 2024), resulted in the execution of 20 search and seizure warrants, in addition to seven arrest warrants in municipalities such as São José de Mipibu, Espírito Santo and Goianinha.

According to information from the Civil Police, the warrants were issued against individuals suspected of involvement in the murders of the lawyer and her client, which occurred in the center of the city of Santo Antônio, in January this year. The investigation, conducted by the Homicide and Personal Protection Division (DHPP), had the support of the PCRN Intelligence Directorate, through the Qualified Investigation Center (NIQ), the 6th Regional Police Station of Nova Cruz and the 66th Police Station of Santo Antônio Police.

The murder of lawyer Brenda dos Santos Oliveira and client Janielson Nunes de Lima, known as “Gordinho da Batata”, remained under investigation since January. At the time, police suspected the participation of at least four people. Janielson, who was being investigated as a suspect in the murder of João Victor Bento da Costa, was summoned to provide clarifications at the police station. After interrogation, Janielson and his lawyer were released, but were attacked and killed by four individuals approximately 500 meters from the location.

The Brazilian Bar Association in Rio Grande do Norte (OAB/RN) was studying the possibility of federalizing the investigations due to the supposed delay in concluding the investigation. The president of OAB/RN, Aldo Medeiros, expressed concern about the lack of communication between the police forces and the Order, as well as the slowness of investigations. The delay in resolving the case was also criticized by Aldo Medeiros, who reported difficulties in obtaining a response from the state Executive.
