An operation by the RN Civil Police arrested eight suspects involved in the death of lawyer Brenda Oliveira, aged 26, and her client, Janielson Nunes de Lima, aged 25, victims of an ambush after leaving a police station with a client in the city of Santo Antônio. Among those arrested, there is a suspicion that some of them are part of an extermination group, including a Military Police corporal suspected of supplying weapons for the crime, which according to the Civil Police, was motivated by revenge.

The details of Operation “Jus Puniendi” were detailed during a press conference this Tuesday (30) at Central de Flagrantes. According to the director of DHPP, Márcio Lemos, the crime would have been motivated by revenge. This is because, two days before the crime, lawyer Brenda’s client was suspected of murdering a cowboy. This cowboy’s family members met with other professionals, who worked in an extermination group in São José do Mipibu, and organized themselves to commit the murder. The arrested police officer provided weapons to these people. “Although it was a crime organized on the day, it was easy because they already had a group with experience in this,” he said. For Lemos, the crime has practically been solved. Among the eight suspects arrested during the morning are also the intellectual authors.

In the weeks leading up to the arrests, the Bar Association considered requesting the federalization of the case, which would move jurisdiction over the investigations to the Federal Police. When talking about the speed of police actions to elucidate the crime, Lemos stated that the time between the murder and Tuesday’s actions was reasonable, considering the objective of the operation. We intended to attack the group that was operating there. We understand, first of all, that the crime challenged the State,” he said.

In a statement, the OAB-RN said that “it remains appalled by the brutal crime that took the life of the young lawyer, but today it finds support in the justice that is beginning to be carried out after the police operation. The OAB/RN recognizes the work of the security forces of Rio Grande do Norte to elucidate the crime”.

“Until there is a final and unappealable criminal sentence, after due legal process, the OAB will not rest and will continue to fight for the guilty parties to receive the respective sentences for the crimes committed,” he said.

The murder of lawyer Brenda dos Santos Oliveira and client Janielson Nunes de Lima, better known as “Gordinho da Batata”, has been under investigation since January. At the time, the Civil Police suspected that at least four people were involved.

On the day of the crime, Janielson went to the police station to give a statement about the case in which he was being investigated as a suspect in the murder of João Victor Bento da Costa, aged 18, who died on January 28th, during the Santo Antônio vaquejada. However, Janielson was ordered to return to the unit to provide further clarification. Upon return, the suspect was interrogated in the presence of the lawyer. At the end of the questions, Janielson was released.

As there was no arrest warrant against him, nothing that had a reason why he could be arrested, nor was he in the act because there was no concrete evidence that he was the killer, he left accompanied by the lawyer, released. However, upon leaving, when she was approximately 500 meters from the location, four individuals intercepted Brenda’s vehicle, attacking both the lawyer and Janielson, who died instantly.
