The Brazilian people felt a heavy blow on May 1, 1994. Ayrton Senna was not just a three-time Formula 1 champion, an achievement obviously surrounded by many glories. He was a representative of the country and leaves memories until this Wednesday, the 30th anniversary of his death.

The tragedy occurred at the San Marino Grand Prix. That weekend was already surrounded by tragedy, with the death of Roland Ratzenberger in training. Rubens Barrichello himself, still a beginner in the category, had suffered a serious accident and also ended up in the hospital. The atmosphere was tense throughout the category and for Senna himself.

Senna’s death occurred when the Brazilian was leading the San Marino Grand Prix, with Michael Schumacher close behind. The Williams driver escaped at the Tamburello corner and hit the wall hard. He was treated on the track and taken by helicopter to the hospital, but he did not survive. Forensics determined that the car’s steering bar caused the fatal injury to the three-time champion’s head.

Ayrton Senna ended his time in Formula 1 leaving an unforgettable legacy and impressive numbers. There were 161 races, 41 victories, 80 podiums, 65 pole positions and 19 best laps. His first triumph was at the Portuguese GP, in 1985, with the Lotus team. The three titles came with McLaren. In addition to Williams, he also raced for Toleman in 1984. The last time he finished first was at the Australian GP in 1993.
