Mayors of Moita and Viana do Alentejo lament the tragedy and make a positive assessment of the participation in the event that grew one day

The 22nd edition of the Horseback Riding between Moita and Viana do Alentejo, held between the 23rd and 28th of April, was marred on the second day by a fatal accident, which cost the life of a 56-year-old pilgrim and caused minor injuries to his son of the victim, 28. Still, what is considered the biggest equestrian event nationally continued. And in the end, a positive assessment was made, despite the consternation felt by the tragedy that occurred.

“Unfortunately, there was a tragic accident and everyone, without exception, was appalled. The pilgrimage turned out to be one of the most attended ever, with around 500 horses registered at the start, a number that doubled upon arrival in Viana do Alentejo”, said Carlos Albino, president of the Moita City Council, to O SETUBALENSE.

Furthermore, the mayor also highlighted that the decision to expand the pilgrimage by another day proved to be the right one. “It turned out that going from four to five days was a positive thing. It allowed the route to be completed with more time and tranquility, there was more time for rest and fellowship among pilgrims, as well as to enjoy moments of a religious nature”, concluded the mayor of Moita.

Luís Miguel Duarte, president of the Municipal Council of Viana do Alentejo, made an identical analysis to that of his counterpart from Moita. Speaking to Rádio Campanário, the Alentejo mayor lamented the tragedy that had occurred, highlighted the same participation figures pointed out by Carlos Albino and even considered that this was the biggest pilgrimage ever.
