Intermittent fasting is on the rise, especially in the world of digital influencers. However, what will be the benefits of this practice? It is rumored to help someone live longer by eating less and researchers are studying it. Therefore, we have gathered what is known so far to keep you up to date.

Where did the theory come from?

Firstly, they went with rats, as they have greater resistance to toxins with caloric restriction, according to the professor of cellular physiology, James Nelson. The second explanation from the associate professor of medicine, Kim Huffman, is that human metabolism slows down when we actually eat. Therefore, by spending less energy, the body will live longer. The third is that research indicates that the body would have to depend on energy sources other than glucose, and this would cause the consumption of dysfunctional parts of the cells, helping them to function better and reduce the risk of various age-related diseases.

What really happens?

In 2009 and 2012, experts published a study with monkeys that lasted 20 years and found that it doesn’t matter how much time you spend eating every day, as only one group of animals lived longer and had lower rates of diseases linked to aging.

Later, several other studies were carried out with people. They tried everything, from decreasing the calorie restriction by 25 to 40 percent, varying fasting times, but everything led to the same result: no conclusion. In fact, a study showed the opposite. Evidence indicates that people with greater weight have less risk of death, and the hypothesis is that, with BMIs bigger ones have more muscles and the protection is greater.

Does eating less help you live longer?

In short, studies on longevity are still scarce and difficult to carry out, as they take a long time. So we come to our question: does eating less help you live longer? And the answer is that it is very likely that going too long without eating or eating small amounts will only make you hungrier.
