Meryl Streep will receive an Honorary Palme d’Or and be the guest of honor at the opening ceremony of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, on May 14th.

The 74-year-old American actress is one of the most awarded in Hollywood history, with a record 21 nominations and three Oscars.

According to the organization’s statement this Thursday, the distinction will come 35 years after winning the Best Actress award for “A Cry of Courage”, her only appearance so far in Cannes.

“I am immensely honored to receive news of this prestigious award. Winning an award at Cannes, for the international community of artists, has always represented the greatest achievement in the art of cinema. Standing in the shadow of those who have been honored is both a humbling and moving experience. I look forward to going to France to thank everyone in person in May!”, said the honoree in the same statement.

“We all have something of Meryl Streep in us! We all have something in us from ‘Kramer vs. Kramer’, ‘Sophie’s Choice’, ‘Africa of Mine’, ‘The Bridges of Madison County’, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and ‘Mamma Mia’! Because she spanned almost 50 years of cinema and embodied countless masterpieces, Meryl Streep is part of our collective imagination, of our shared love for cinema”, noted Iris Knobloch and Thierry Frémaux, the leading figures of Cannes.

In addition to Meryl Streep, the honorary Palme d’Or will also be awarded at the closing ceremony to George Lucas, the father of the “Star Wars” saga.

The legendary Japanese animation studio Ghibli, linked to films such as “My Neighbor Totoro”, “Princess Mononoke”, “Spirited Away”, “The Walking Castle” and “The Grave of the Fireflies”, will also receive the distinction, the first that will be collective in the history of the most important film festival in the world.

The 77th Cannes Film Festival is scheduled from May 14th to 25th and will feature several Portuguese films.

In the feature film competition, competing for the Palme d’Or, “Grand Tour”, by Miguel Gomes, while “Mau por um moment”, by Daniel Soares, is selected for the short film competition.

During Critics’ Week, one of the parallel programs, the short film “My sensations are everything I have to offer”, by Isadora Neves Marques, competes.

In the Filmmakers’ Fortnight, another of the parallel programs, will be the feature film “A Savana e a Montanha”, by Paulo Carneiro, and the short films “ Quando a terra fugi”, by Frederico Lobo, and “O Jardim em Movimento” , by Inês Lima.

In a co-production with Portugal, the film “Algo viejo, algo nuevo, algo presta”, by Argentine director Hermán Rosselli, will also be presented.
