Meryl Streep to receive honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes

American actress Meryl Streep will receive an honorary Palme d’Or at the opening of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, on May 14, as the organizers announced this Thursday (2).

Streep, 74, is one of the most respected actresses in Hollywood, with 3 Oscars and 21 nominations – a record.

His career spans dramas such as “O Franco Atirador”, “Entre Dois Amores” and “Kramer vs. Kramer” and hits like “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Mamma Mia!”

Streep was only at Cannes once, in 1989, when she won the Best Actress award for “A Scream in the Dark”.

The actress said she was “immensely honored to receive the news” of the nomination. “Winning an award at Cannes, for the international community of artists, has always represented the highest achievement in the art of cinema,” she said in a statement.

“Standing in the shadow of those who have been honored previously makes me feel humbled and humbled,” she added.

Streep joins a host of Hollywood veterans appearing at this year’s festival on France’s Côte d’Azur, including “Star Wars” creator George Lucas, who will also receive an honorary award at the closing ceremony.

“After almost 50 years in cinema and embodying countless masterpieces, Meryl Streep is already part of our collective imagination, our shared love of cinema,” festival organizers said in the statement.

Legendary Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli will also receive an honorary Palme d’Or – the first time awarded to a collective.
