Robert Pickton, who is alleged to have murdered dozens of women, is now eligible to apply for parole

Robert Picktonone serial killer of Canada, is currently serving a life sentence in the province of British Columbia for murder of six women. However, he is now eligible to apply for parole.

Pickton was born in 1949 and took over the family pig farm in Port Coquitlam, near Vancouver, in 1970, after the death of his parents.

International headlines made waves in February 2002, when local police issued a search warrant for the farm. Pickton, under the pretext of investigating a complaint of illegal possession of a firearm. However, authorities found mutilated bodies stored in freezers at the site.

After more than a year of investigations, human remains were also discovered among the waste left by the pigs. According to information from the UOL news portal, victims of Pickton were mainly women who lived on the streets, involved in prostitution or were drug addicts.

Pickton was convicted in 2007 of six counts of murder, although he confessed to the murder of 49 women. However, Canadian authorities decided not to try him by the full number, claiming that new sentences would not result in an increase in the sentence he had already received.

Despite the sentence that considered only six victims, the authorities and the families of the missing women hold him responsible for the deaths of up to 69 women.

Reviews

According to the source, the actions of the Vancouver police were criticized, as authorities received several reports about the disappearance of dozens of women and signs linking Pickton to the cases, but they refused to investigate the pig farmer for years.

In 2010, three years after the conviction of Pickton for the murders, Vancouver police issued an official statement apologizing to the victims’ families for ignoring the women’s disappearances for years.

Parole

In February of that year, already 70 years old, the man became eligible to apply for parole. In 2007, Pickton was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years.

However, under a Canadian law that stipulates that prison sentences must be served concurrently rather than consecutively, he is now eligible to apply parole daytime, and may seek full parole from 2027.

The victims’ families reacted with outrage to the news, according to the Daily Mail, expressing disgust at the return of Pickton in the spotlight.
