The planet’s resources available for this year would end this Friday if everyone in the world consumed as much as the European Union (EU) does.
The concern arises in an open letter, released today and signed by several environmental organizations, some Portuguese, such as the League for the Protection of Nature (LPN), Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA), Associação Natureza Portugal/World Fund for Nature (ANP/WWF) and Zero – Sustainable Earth System Association.
The letter urges European governments “to make a political commitment to work towards an economy with a neutral impact on the climate, with zero pollution and positive for nature”.
In this way, the organizations claim that if the rest of the world consumed as much as the EU, humanity would start consuming on credit from today, that is, using resources that should only be used in 2025.
For change to occur, political decision-makers need to deepen and accelerate the European Ecological Pact, says the letter, and increase public investments in climate, environment and social justice.
