Judge Sergio Luiz Patitucci, from the Paraná Court of Justice, determined that Raul should remain in prison. “I’m keeping him in prison so he can undergo detoxification and, in the future, who knows, he can undergo treatment [para dependência química]”, argued the magistrate.
Raul would have been beaten
Raul Pelegrin’s family’s defense stated that the businessman was beaten in prison. The attack would have occurred the day before he died in a hospital in Piraquara.
Raul’s medical record in prison describes what happened. In the document, obtained by UOL, it is described that, around 12:30 pm on April 3, prisoners reported that the businessman was being beaten by colleagues in a cell at the Casa de Custódia de Piraquara. The prisoner was removed from the scene, taken to the infirmary and, after assessment, was taken to the UPA (Emergency Care Unit) in Piraquara.
Records indicate that Raul returned to the prison unit hours later, in the early evening of the 3rd, and was transferred to his cell. The following day (April 4), at around 3:30 pm, Raul was taken and was admitted to Hospital Angelina Caron, in the metropolitan region of Curitiba, after experiencing breathing difficulties. The Paraná Criminal Police told the UOL that, at around 1:30 am on the 5th, the House of Custody was informed about the man’s death in the health unit, where he was under police escort.
The family’s defense claims that the prisoner was “brutally beaten” and says that the prison sector denied access to Raul’s medical records. According to lawyer Adriano Bretas, after the refusal, access to the document was requested from the Court, which accepted the request. Bretas claims that the attack against his client was “hidden” from the defense and the prisoner’s family. At the time, the defense also informed the UOL which would activate different bodies to clarify the circumstances of the death.
