Former Los Angeles Lakers guard Darius Morris died at the age of 33 on Saturday. Morris’ cause of death has not yet been released. The Lakers published, on the official X profile, formerly Twitter, that the club “is devastated by Morris’ departure.” Confirmation of the death was made by the former athlete’s family, via social media: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear son, Darius Aaron Morris. During this time of transition, his family asks that you respect his wishes for privacy and grace.”
Darius Morris, born in 1991 in Los Angeles and raised in Carson, had a career that began on the high school field at Windward School, where he won a California state title in his senior season. His journey took him to the University of Michigan, where he set records and distinguished himself as a talented point guard.
The Lakers brought Morris home in 2011, selecting him in the 41st round of the NBA Draft. He even shared the court with Kobe Bryant.
One of the highlights of Morris’ career came in the 2013 playoffs, where he averaged 10.5 points, 1.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 26.2 minutes per game, despite being injured.
In addition to his time with the Lakers, Morris had an NBA career that included stints with the Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets. Over 132 league games, he contributed averages of 3.3 points, 1.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 11.1 minutes per game.
After his NBA career, Morris continued playing, exploring international leagues and the G League. His travels took him to countries such as China, Russia and France, before officially ending his career in 2020.
