André Ventura wants to know “why downtown Porto has been plagued by attacks, robberies and other types of crimes, often whose perpetrators are immigrants, whether Algerian, Moroccan or others, and this has been hidden from the country in recent times”

The Chega leader today condemned violence and hate crimes against immigrants and suggested that what happened in Porto could be related to “attacks and robberies” in the city, asking the Minister of Internal Administration for explanations.

“Chega decided to urgently call the Minister of Internal Administration to parliament not only to explain and present the data it has in its possession in relation to what happened in Porto and the motivations for this attack, which must be investigated and severely punished, but also to explain why downtown Porto has been plagued by attacks, robberies and other types of crimes, often whose perpetrators are immigrants, whether Algerian, Moroccan or others, and this has been hidden from the country in recent times”, he stated .

André Ventura spoke to journalists at Chega’s national headquarters, in Lisbon, about the attacks on immigrants that took place in the early hours of Friday in Porto.

“The minister must explain what she intends to do about this situation to prevent violence and hatred from multiplying and that security and order are truly the rules in Portugal, and not episodes like this”, he defended.

The leader of Chega said that his party “unreservedly condemns all violence, all hate crimes or crimes motivated by any other factor” and welcomed the work of the security forces and criminal investigation.

Pointing out that “violence cannot take place in Portugal” and that the condemnation must be clear and unequivocal”, Ventura also refused to be “hypocritical about what is happening, nor to have double standards”.

André Ventura said there was no certainty “regarding the origin of the attackers, their motivations and what led to the attacks” and that “PSP said it was premature to talk about racist attacks or those with a racist motivation”.

“There is a deep problem that we still don’t know whether or not the conflicts related to the attacks in Porto originated,” he said.

The president of Chega also accused the prime minister of hypocrisy because he “quickly condemned the attack, and rightly so, against Algerian citizens, but remained silent about the consistent attacks on shopkeepers in the downtown port during the last few months”.

“The collective schizophrenia and paranoia that when immigrants are involved we must stop the entire country to look at a specific situation, ignoring all others around it during all the previous months or years is nothing more than a sign of a society that he cannot escape political correctness and has stopped connecting with people and their reality”, he claimed.

And he once again insisted that “there is a problem of uncontrolled immigration in Portugal”, asking the Government.
