Exclusive: Fantastic interviews Erika Souza, who became known as the niece who took her dead uncle to the bank

Erika de Souza Vieira Nunes, aged 42, is the niece of Paulo Roberto Braga, who died at the age of 68. She was the protagonist of an image that the whole of Brazil saw. In the video, Erika takes her uncle in a wheelchair to the bank to withdraw a loan of 17 thousand reais. Paulo Roberto was dead.

On Thursday (2), She left jail after two weeks in prison.

“They were horrible days away from my family. I experienced moments in my life that I couldn’t bear anymore. Very difficult. It was horrible that I didn’t realize that my uncle was dead. […] I’m not that person they’re talking about, I’m not that monster”, he got emotional.

Erika received the Fantástico team exclusively at the lawyer’s office (see video above). The relationship [com Paulo Roberto, o tio] it was great. He was independent, did what he wanted. He had a good mind. He wasn’t in a wheelchair and I wasn’t his caregiver,” he said.

Asked if she didn’t think Paulo Roberto was too weak to leave the house, she replied: “No, because he asked me to go.” And she reported that everything went well in the car on the way to the bank.

Erika describes the dialogue she had with Paulo Roberto before they joined the agency. According to her, while still on the street, she asked her uncle if he would be more comfortable if she supported his head. “I asked if that would be better, he said yes.”

Regarding the sequence of events inside the bank, she states that she “can’t remember much” due to the use of the controlled medications she takes regularly.

“As I undergo treatment, I took zolpidem, sometimes I took more than one. [O esquecimento] I don’t know if it was the effect of the medicine I had taken that day”, he says.

Paulo Roberto’s health condition

Before going to the bank, Paulo Roberto was hospitalized for a week in a state health unit. According to Erika, she did not receive any guidance from doctors after discharge.

“They gave me a prescription for a five-day medicine, I bought the medicine and the diaper. I thought he would get betterwhich was just pneumonia”, he says.

This week, the Public Ministry denounced Erika and stated that she acted consciously, voluntarily and demonstrated total contempt and disrespect for Paulo Roberto.

Judge Luciana Mocco accepted the MP’s complaint and Erika became a defendant for attempted embezzlement and vilification of a corpse, which is the act of belittling a dead person.

The judge revoked the preventive detention, claiming that Erika is a primary defendant, has a fixed residence and does not represent a risk to public order while free. The judge also reported that Erika has poor mental health and needs to take care of her minor daughter who has special needs.

A Civil police do Rio opened another investigation and is investigating whether she committed culpable homicide – when there is no intention to kill.
