Combating climate change is increasingly urgent

-

The urgency to combat climate change is increasingly evident as devastating impacts become more frequent and intense across the world. Key indicators such as the increase in the global average temperature, the rise in sea levels, the accelerated melting of polar ice caps and glaciers, as well as the increase in the frequency and severity of extreme events such as hurricanes, heat waves, wildfires, droughts , torrential rains and floods, as is happening in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, are clear warnings that immediate action is necessary.

In view of these recent unprecedented rains and floods that have devastated and are still plaguing the state of Rio Grande do Sul, it is past time to recognize that these extreme events are not just isolated coincidences, but rather alarming symptoms of ongoing climate change, which insist on knocking on a door closer and closer to ours – if it hasn’t already knocked. The images of entire communities flooded and families left homeless or waiting for help, animals at risk of drowning, help not arriving in time serve as a stark reminder of the real and immediate impact of climate change on our environment and our lives. These extreme events not only put people’s safety and well-being at risk, but also highlight the urgent need for adaptation and mitigation measures to address emerging climate challenges. And it can start with attitudes adopted by each one of us, citizens who live on this planet that has been crying out for help for a long time now.

How about remembering some tips here?

Given this scenario, we must explore strategies and approaches to face the challenge of climate change, with a special focus on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13, which aims to combat these changes.

In each of these items there is a lot to do. And at this moment? We can start by making a pix. A pix of any value, as the situation is now an emergency and we have nothing to discuss here. If you can, do it. If you can’t, share!

And then what do we definitely need to do? It is to reduce our carbon footprint, which is a measure of the total greenhouse gases emitted directly or indirectly by a person, organization, event or product, expressed in tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). It reflects the environmental impact of human activities, including energy consumption, transport, food, among others. (I already talked about this in another article in the link I posted here a little while ago).

In that article I had listed 10 attitudes, but today I would add some more actions to be put into practice now, immediately, now, “ride now”:

1) Think with a lot of love, care and awareness about who you will vote for in the next elections. This candidate must at least be aware of this topic, because otherwise the others will not even be able to happen.

2) Value your small attitudes of change, such as refusing the bag at the market, using your own mug in the workplace, “going to bed”, separating waste, not throwing rubbish on the floor, among others So simple but they start the thread of sustainability.

3) Reduce consumption especially of red meat and dairy, which have a significant carbon footprint associated with production. Rethink your diet.

4) Think about growing a vegetable garden at home.

5) Compost. You will love earthworms and what they and their friendly group do for nature and our planet.

6) Take care of small water and energy consumption. Turn off the tap to soap the dishes and while brushing your teeth. Turn off the lights and do not leave equipment on standby (an example is a charger plugged into the socket without the equipment to be charged being there). The little from each of us is a lot in the final result.

7) Always opt for reusable alternatives, such as fabric bags, refillable water bottles, metal cutlery and glass or metal straws.

8) Reuse. Practice upcycling.

9) Grow your sustainable circle. Support causes and learn about projects. Let yourself be sensitized.

10) Make the pix to Rio Grande do Sul. SOS Rio Grande do Sul. The Pix key has been reestablished (CNPJ: 92.958.800/0001-38)

Let’s go! It’s possible! Join this movement!
