The Brazilian Paralympic taekwondo team won 41 medals, 16 of which were gold, 10 silver and 15 bronze, in two continental paralympic taekwondo competitions held in Rio de Janeiro.
At the Pan American Championship, held last Friday, the 3rd, there were 20 medals, seven gold, three silver and 10 bronze, with the team becoming team champions.
The gold medalists of the competition were Gustavo Ruppel (up to 58 kg), Valter Sedano (up to 70 kg), Pedro Paulo Neves (over 80 kg), Maria Eduarda Stumpf (up to 52 kg), Ana Carolina Moura (up to 65 kg), Deborah Menezes (over 65 kg) and Silvana Cardoso Fernandes (up to 57 kg).
In addition to the medals, Gustavo Ruppel, 16, was chosen as the best male athlete and coach Dennys Alison was chosen as the best male coach.
In the Open, held on Sunday the 5th, the Brazilian team won nine gold medals, seven silver medals and five bronze medals, totaling 21 podiums.
The gold medals went to Leonardo Jhonatan (up to 58 kg), Eduardo Porto (up to 63 kg), Bruno Rodrigues (up to 70 kg), Pedro Paulo Neves (over 80 kg), Terezinha de Jesus (up to 47 kg), Cristhiane Neves (up to 52 kg), Silvana Cardoso (up to 57 kg), Ana Carolina Moura (up to 65 kg) and Débora Menezes (over 65 kg).
Leonardo Jhonatan and Débora Menezes were chosen as the best male and female athletes, respectively.
The Brazilian Paralympic taekwondo team has six places for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, starting on August 28th. Five of them were achieved from the world ranking. The sixth was obtained by Claro Lopes from Minas Gerais in April, in Modality qualifier held in the Dominican Republic.
Taekwondo debuted at the Paralympic Games in the Tokyo 2020 edition, when Brazil became champion in the sport with three medals won by its three participants: a gold obtained by Nathan Torquato, a silver by Debora Menezes and a bronze by Silvana Fernandes.
