The Grupo Carrefour Brasil group announced that it will freeze food prices in all its stores in Rio Grande do Sul. The measure was announced this Monday (6), in light of the climate catastrophe that the State is facing, which has caused 83 deaths and leaves more than 100 missing.

According to the supermarket chain, the measure is valid for all the company’s brands in the state: Carrefour, Atacadão, Sam’s Club and Nacional. The freeze will have a base date of May 1st, that is, before the flooding in the State worsens. Prices will remain unchanged, according to the group’s statement, until May 31st.

“It is not an easy definition, as it involves suppliers, stocks, pricing. However, at this difficult time for the State and for Brazil, the Group believes that it is essential for the population to have access to products without any adjustments. It provides reassurance to the population that prices will be the same until the end of May. There is no need to be afraid of readjustments”, says the CEO (executive director) of Grupo Carrefour Brasil, Stéphane Maquaire.

Carrefour claims to have put in place a support plan for its employees in Rio Grande do Sul. The protocol involves direct contact with hundreds of professionals and immediate support in case of urgent needs.

Donations

Since last week, in partnership with the non-governmental organization Ação da Cidadania, 20 Carrefour Brasil Group stores in RS have been made available to receive collections. Non-perishable food, personal hygiene kits and cleaning materials can be deposited at the site for those affected by the rains.

Due to the increase in the level of flooding, so far, five of these 20 have had to be temporarily closed. The Group continues to receive donations until 5/24. The addresses of the stores in operation are at this link.

“The Group’s commitment to supporting Rio Grande do Sul remains strong. Brazil follows with sadness and apprehension what happens to Brazilians who live in the state. As the largest food retailer in the country, we hope that the measure will serve as an example for the entire sector”, adds Maquaire.
