Ukrainian drones hit “two oil depots” that “stored 26,000 cubic meters of fuel” during the operation organized by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), said the same source, who was not identified.

Ukraine’s action comes in a context of tensions with Washington, which has publicly criticized Kiev’s attacks on energy facilities on Russian territory.

Hours earlier, the regional governor of Smolensk, Vasily Anokhin, stated that several energy facilities in the region had been destroyed by fires caused by Ukrainian drone attacks.

“Our region has once again been the target of Ukrainian drone attacks,” the governor wrote on social media.

“As a result of enemy attack [Ucrânia] fires broke out”, added the governor, without providing further details about the affected locations.

The attack caused no casualties, added the same local Russian official.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations sent rescue teams to the scene.

Also today, another drone attack targeted the special economic zone in the city of Lipetsk, also about 400 kilometers from the Ukrainian border but further south, which is home to a number of metallurgical and pharmaceutical companies, said the region’s governor, Igor Artamonov.

“The criminal regime in Kiev tried to attack the infrastructure of the Lipetsk industrial zone,” Artamonov said. The governor did not register any victims and assured that residential areas are not threatened.

In recent months, the Ukrainian army has intensified drone attacks on Russian territory, particularly targeting facilities linked to the energy sector.
