‘I was treated like anyone else’, says businessman of the Porsche that caused the death of an app driver

Hours before his preventive detention was ordered, the now considered fugitive Fernando Sastre Filho spoke for the first time, in his lawyer’s office. When questioned, Fernando spoke about the treatment he received from the PM and countered that he had been “privileged”.

“I haven’t been following the media much, so I don’t know how big this is either. But I’m nothing like that, I didn’t have any privileged treatment. It was a media case that broke out and that was it. For me it was all normal, There was no privileged treatment. I was treated like anyone else”, he says.

In the video from one of the body cameras of the police officers who responded to the incident, Fernando and his mother, Daniela, are seen leaving the scene of the accident. Aware of the raid, Daniela had gone to see her son. “Actually, what happened was that my mother, she was helping me”, says Fernando.

The police took down the young man’s details and his version of the accident. The mother wanted to urgently take her son for exams. And then they were both dismissed.

“We stayed there for over an hour, an hour and a half, I can’t even remember, but we stayed there for a long time”, says the young man.

Fernando spent 40 minutes at the scene: from 2:29 am, the time of the accident, until 3:09 am, the time indicated on the body camera. But, instead of going to the hospital, as he had told the police, Fernando and his mother went home.

“My mother stops by the house so I can get my health insurance card. When I get home, I’m very out of control, I’m very nervous about everything that’s happening. And then she gives me some medicine. And then I … I delete it”, he states.

In a statement, the Public Security Secretariat recognizes that there were procedural failures and says it will hold the police officers responsible for not following the law and not subjecting the driver to a breathalyzer test. He also states that he will not give any more details about the case, which is being kept under judicial secrecy. For the same reason, confidentiality, the Public Ministry denied an interview.

Now, Fernando is a defendant for murder and very serious bodily injury, both with possible intent, which is when the risk of killing and injuring is assumed.r. The request for his arrest was issued by the São Paulo Court of Justice on Friday (3), after three denials in the first instance.

Fernando’s defense will file a habeas corpus request. At this moment, Fernando is a fugitive from justice. Fernando’s lawyer, Jonas Marzagão, said that the Porsche driver will only hand himself in when the defense receives from the judge the guarantee that his client will be safe in jail.
