The Lakers saw the first of many contract decisions being made this Tuesday. Christian Wood, one of five Lakers players with player options for next season, will exercise his option for the 2024-25 season, as reported by Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

Wood played 50 games for the Lakers this season, but was injured during the second half.

Christian Wood became a Laker for the first time last season when he signed a two-year contract with a player option. The $3 million is a relatively low figure, but given that Wood had no offers other than the veteran minimum on the table last offseason and hasn’t put up flashy numbers in the 2023-24 season, it appears he thought it best to exercise the option.

That said, he will return to the Lakers for the 2024-25 season.

Wood had some good moments as a Laker. He averaged 6.9 points and 5.9 rebounds and, at his best, provided quality minutes as a backup center and took some of the burden off Anthony Davis.

One of his most notable games was when he scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a Lakers win against the Clippers.

Wood’s return gives the Lakers a center who has shown some flashes of quality, but isn’t exactly a player the team needs to maintain continuity and be successful in the future.

Wood’s salary does not bring harm to the Lakers

However, for such a low price, this move won’t hurt the Lakers too much and gives the team a respectable backup that can be used in the regular season rotation.

There’s a lot of work for Rob Pelinka this offseason.
