The Dolphin Rotador Project, from Fernando de Noronha, led a solidarity campaign for the victims of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul. The entity collected donations from the island’s residents, which will be sent to the residents of Rio Grande do Sul. The project collected products from homes that were transported to the airport in two pickup trucks, mostly clothes and shoes.
The idea came from the project’s executive coordinator, Ademir Ventura, who led the work. “We mobilized residents to make donations, we went to their homes to collect all the material that we will send to Rio Grande do Sul. The island community collaborated”, declared Ventura.
The founder of the dolphin preservation entity, oceanographer José Martins, is from the city of Taquari, and participated in the campaign.
“As a native of Vale do Taquari, I was moved and grateful to the Fernando de Noronha community for the enormous help given to the gauchos at this time. I was not surprised, because, as a resident of the island for 35 years, I know about the socio-environmental awareness and the power of kindness in the Noronha community,” said Martins.
The company Azul Linhas Aéreas is receiving donations in its stores throughout Brazil, including in Fernando de Noronha. The company received the donations and committed to transporting the material.
Since 1990, the Rotator Dolphin Project has carried out monitoring and conservation work for cetaceans in Fernando de Noronha, with support from the Petrobras Socio-Environmental Program.
In addition to research actions, the NGO encourages the practice of surfing among young people, as well as a maracatu group, and develops activities at Escola Arquipélago and Centro Integrado Bem-Me-Quer.
