The first set of EU rules aimed at protecting the independence and pluralism of the media, embodied in the Freedom of the Media Regulation, came into force today. This is an unprecedented new set of rules to protect the independence and pluralism of the media. This new legislation provides safeguards against political interference in editorial decisions and against the surveillance of journalists. The regulation ensures the smooth functioning of social media in the internal market and in the digital environment. Furthermore, it also aims to ensure the independence and stable funding of public service media, as well as transparency of both media ownership and state advertising attribution.

Proposed by the Commission in September 2022, the regulation establishes several protections under the right to media plurality that will become fully applicable within six months. More information about the application calendar in this infographic. More information is also available about the Commission’s action to defend media freedom and pluralism and the safety of journalists.
