However, auction house Aguttes maintains that the trophy was stored at the Banco della Província in Naples and was stolen in 1989 by local gangsters. It only reappeared in 2016, when it was acquired in a lot from a private collection in Paris.
Since then, it has been “Thoroughly investigated and authenticated as Diego Maradona’s Ballon d’Or trophy“, states Aguttes, guaranteeing its authenticity. This unique trophy is expected to sell for millions, reflecting not only the historical value of the object, but also Maradona’s undisputed legacy in world football.
