Convenience stores start selling gold in vending machines

UA convenience store chain in South Korea began selling gold bars in April from vending machines.

According to international publications, Nice to CU [Prazer em vê-lo, em português] is the largest convenience store chain in the country and the introduction of this material in its stores has been quite successful.

The gold bars, the size of a fingernail, according to the press, have various weights – between 0.1 gram and 1.87 grams. The most valuable ones, weighing almost two grams, can be purchased for 225,000 won, around 154 euros.

The one-gram bars, which cost 113,000 won, around 77 euros, sold out in two days, according to the press.

Bars come with personalized messages, including congratulatory wishes, more general congratulations, or distinctive designs.

According to publications, consumers in their 30s are those who have used these vending machines the most, representing 41% of total sales since their launch on April 1st.

Consumers in their 40s represent 35.2% of sales, followed by those in their 50s, with 15.6%.

According to the World Gold Council, interest in gold bars in this Asian country has increased significantly. Experts realize that the increase in demand for gold may be due to a period of economic uncertainty and devaluation of the local currency. In order to ‘take precautions’, consumers look for assets like each other, in order to protect their investments.
