“O Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front (for the liberation of Palestine) are participating in the negotiations (…) there are signs that an agreement is maturing”, said the “high-level” Egyptian sources, cited by the channel Al Qahera News television station, close to the secret services in Cairo.
The same sources, who asked not to be identified, added that “the controversial points are being resolved” during the new round of negotiations that began on Tuesday in the Egyptian capital with the participation of delegations from Egypt, Qatar and the United States. .
The inclusion of groups such as Islamic Jihad in the Cairo meetings could be, according to Al Qahera News, “a sign of progress”, as it is one of the groups linked to the taking of Israeli hostages during the Hamas attack on Israel, on October 7, 2023.
However, it is not known exactly at what point the negotiations are, particularly regarding the latest proposal presented by the mediators, which has already been accepted by Hamas, although Israel continues to ask for time to analyze the text.
The proposal foresees a pause in three phases, of 42 days each, enabling the exchange of Israeli hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons and also the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, as well as an increase in humanitarian aid to civilians.
The new round of negotiations coincides with the military operation launched by Israel on Monday in Rafah, in the extreme south of Gaza, in which Israel took control of the Palestinian side of the border crossing.
