UA woman living in the North of the country only discovered that her mother, who had been admitted to the emergency department of the Matosinhos Health Unit, with “difficulty swallowing and pneumonia”, had died when, the following day, she went to visit her.
The case is reported by the Health Regulatory Authority (ERS), which issued an instruction to the health unit in question.
According to the ERS, the woman made a complaint in which she alleges that, when she went to the Matosinhos Health Unit to see her mother, who had been admitted to the hospital on January 6th, she came across ” the empty bed.”
When he asked about his mother’s whereabouts, he was told that she had “passed away at 2:35 am”, that is, several hours before visiting time.
In light of the complaint from the user’s daughter, the hospital regretted what had happened, apologized and assured that this ‘forgetfulness’ is not a “habit of doctors in the Internal Medicine service, nor of the assistant doctor, and should not have occurred”.
After an “attentive and rigorous” analysis of the case, the ERS concluded that the Matosinhos Health Unit “did not demonstrate compliance with the protection of the rights and interests of users”, namely “the companion’s right to be duly informed, within a reasonable time , on the patient’s situation in the different phases of care, ensuring special care, speed and correctness in the communication of sensitive information, such as the death of a family member”.
The ERS thus issued an instruction to the Matosinhos Local Health Unit in order to permanently guarantee that companions are duly informed about the patient’s situation, as well as to guarantee “permanently” that the procedures are “correctly” followed and respected by all its workers and/or service providers.
