The Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul confirmed, this Thursday (9), two more deaths as a result of the heavy rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul since the 26th. This brings the total number of confirmed deaths to 107 . One death is still under investigation.
According to the state agency’s most recent bulletin, released at 9am today, at least 136 people are missing in the climate disaster, which affected 1.47 million people in the 425 municipalities affected.
The data also includes 164,583 homeless people, who had to, at some point, seek shelter in the homes of family or friends. Many of them are still waiting for the water level to drop so they can return to their homes.
Another 67,542 people were left homeless, that is, with nowhere to go, and had to take refuge in municipal public shelters.
According to Lieutenant Sabrina Ribas, from the state Civil Defense communications department, the priority at this time is to complete the rescue of people who remain stranded in difficult-to-access places and ensure that humanitarian aid and donations reach the municipalities most affected by the heavy rains. Among the most necessary items are mineral water, clothes and food.
