Court orders arrest of Cruzeiro fans convicted of attacking a bus with athletes that caused death | Minas Gerais

Two Cruzeiro fans convicted of the murder of an athlete were arrested this Thursday (9), in Belo Horizonte. Last year, the duo went on trial for the death of Mateus de Freitas Ferreira, during an attack on a bus with Galo fans, in 2021.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, despite being sentenced to more than 55 years in prison, they received the right to use electronic ankle bracelets and be free (understand below). The prosecution filed an appeal with the Minas Gerais Court of Justice (TJMG), claiming that the decision was omitted, because it disregarded a provision in the Criminal Procedure Code regarding popular juries.

According to the law, sentences equal to or greater than 15 years of imprisonment decreed by the Jury Court must be provisionally executed. This means that the defendants would have to begin serving the sentence, in a closed regime, even before the final judgment becomes final, a phase in which resources are exhausted.

The TJMG accepted the prosecutors’ request and ordered, last Tuesday (7), the issuance of arrest warrants. g1 tries to contact the fans’ defense.

Gustavo Luiz da Silva was sentenced to a total of 61 years and 8 months of closed prison per triple homicide for a clumsy, cruel reason and a resource that made it difficult to defend the victim and eight attempted double qualified homicides for a bad reason and a resource that made it difficult for the victims to defend themselves.

Walker Marcelino Gouveia Lopes was sentenced to a total of 56 years and 4 months of closed prison also by triple homicide and for seven attempted double qualified homicides.

In total, 19 witnesses were heard. When questioned, the defendants denied participation in the crime and said they only provided aid to the victims.

According to the Military Police (PM), around 30 Cruzeiro residents ambushed and intercepted the bus, which was carrying around 45 passengers, in the Barreiro region. They vandalized the vehicle with stones, sticks and a Molotov cocktail..
