HBO confirmed the delay in recording the third season of “Euphoria”, but what motivated it? Is the series at risk?

Created by Sam Levinson, “Euphoria” is an HBO original series that follows a group of high school students as they deal with drugs, sex, identity, trauma, social media, love and friendship, presenting a raw and realistic look at what it’s like being a teenager these days.

Since its debut in 2019, “Euphoria” has proven to be one of the greatest cultural phenomena of recent years, garnering not only enormous repercussion on social media, but also distinction at award ceremonies, with Zendaya already winning two Emmys for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

After a few years of waiting, everything indicated that the series would start recording the third season this spring, however in an official statement HBO announced the delay, ensuring that “HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season”, but “in the meantime, we are allowing our highly sought-after cast to seek other opportunities.”

According to Varietythere is even a doubt about whether a third season will even happen, as behind the scenes reveal several creative clashes, yet the feeling is that the series is of great value for HBO Max and it is important that it receives a worthy final season .

According to the same source, Sam Levinson, who writes and directs all the episodes, presented in the winter of 2023 his idea for a season that would make a time jump five years into the future for the lives of East Highland High School alumni. , which included very strong narrative arcs for Nate (Jacob Elordi) and Cassie (Sydney Sweeney), which caused excitement. When the strike ended and Levinson submitted the completed scripts, he was surprised by a negative reaction from Zendaya, unhappy with the fact that Rue was now a private detective relegated to the background.

Until now, Levinson and Zendaya have been establishing a creative partnership, which even went into film with “Malcolm & Marie”. Although Zendaya does not have any veto power, as the protagonist and executive producer, she has a say in the future of the series and has suggested a direction for her character.

When Levinson returned to present the episodes, it was time for the executives to be dissatisfied, claiming that the new scripts did not follow the same tone as the other seasons. Among the various proposals, Zendaya worked on an idea in which Rue, now sober, became a surrogate mother. Something that also didn’t help Levinson was the tragic death of Angus Cloud (Fezco), who would have a strong presence in the original conception of what the third season of “Euphoria” would be.

With so many creative problems, HBO studied other alternatives such as a film or specials, and even the firing of Sam Levinson. However, the Variety assures that the cast is committed to making a third season – with Sam Levinson – mainly, the most influential trio of young actors today: Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi. Something worth considering is that these actors’ careers are on the rise and it can become difficult to get them to organize their very busy schedule to fit in the demanding task of filming a season of a series.

HBO has released the cast for the rest of 2024, promising that October 1 will bring news with a solid plan to begin filming the third and final season in 2025. What’s out of the question for HBO is going into production without a strong argument that pleases everyone, as this happened with the troubled and failed project “The Idol” by Sam Levinson and The Weeknd.
