A Belgian public station VRT had, this Thursday, a ‘stop’ to leave a message against Israel’s actions in the Middle East… at the time the second Eurovision semi-final was broadcast.
According to Belgian publications, for a few moments, before the festival, the screen went black and the message could be read: “We condemn the violation of Human Rights carried out by the State of Israel”.
The message ends with a request to cease fire.
The public station’s spokeswoman explained to the Belgian press that it was, in fact, “an action by the unions”. “We were informed that this was going to happen. The unions have the right to do this and do not need our authorization. We took note of the situation”, explained the person in charge.
The ‘timing’ happened given that today Israel performed on the Eurovision stage, after a controversial ‘entry’ into the contest, as the country initially had a song that talked about the October 7th attack. Israel, however, changed the music and the competition, but the controversy did not calm down.
Just hours before Eden Golan took the stage, several protesters took to the streets in Malmo, Sweden, where the competition is taking place, to protest against the country’s participation. Even during the 20-year-old competitor’s dress rehearsal, the artist was booed, as you can see here.
Israel was one of the ten countries that reached the final of the competition today, which is scheduled to take place next Saturday, May 11th.
