Ohe parents of a 7-year-old girl who was buried alive on a beach and died say the potential dangers of digging a hole in the sand “never crossed their minds.”
Sloan Mattingly was playing with her brother Maddox in Lauderdale-by-the Sea, Florida, USA, when the walls of a 2 meter deep hole they were digging collapsed on them.
The girl tried to save herself by holding on to her brother, who was trapped, but kept his head above the surface.
The brothers were removed and taken to the hospital, but the girl did not survive. She was buried for 20 minutes.
The mother, Therese, says the family has “no idea how it happened.”
“We’re the kind of people that other parents or family members roll their eyes at because we’re a little overprotective most of the time,” the woman told ‘Good Morning America’, in her first statements after the tragedy.
“I think about everything. When we go to the beach we think about water safety. And that never, ever crossed my mind. Of course. Now, looking at it now, I think ‘of course!’ And that part is really frustrating,” she said.
In the 911 call released by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, beachgoers can be heard screaming as a woman, who says she is a nurse, tells the operator that “there is a little girl buried in the sand.” The girl’s father shouted for help and people tried to help.
