Fancesco Bernetti Evangelista, a retired surgeon who works at a health center in the province of Fermo, Italy, is being seen as a hero in the country. The doctor, according to the Italian press, diagnosed a 15-year-old teenager who went to the emergency room and discharged her, but, after some doubts, decided to visit her home. Decision that saved the young woman’s life.
The case happened in the early hours of Wednesday, when the teenager was admitted to the emergency room at the Augusto Murri health center, accompanied by her parents. She had a high fever and complained that she couldn’t feel her feathers.
Doctors on duty, including Bernetti Evangelista, who helps in the emergency room during shifts with fewer health professionals, diagnosed the teenager with the flu and discharged her around 3 p.m.
However, during the following day, the fever did not go down and, after his shift, the doctor decided to go to the family’s house because he doubted the diagnosis. He feared that the teenager had spinal inflammation and not the flu, which was confirmed.
Bernetti Evangelista advised the family to take the young woman to the hospital, where she ended up being admitted to a neurology unit. It was confirmed that she had severe inflammation in her spinal cord, which degenerated further after being neglected for several days.
The young woman began receiving treatment, which caused the inflammation to decrease and her feathers to feel again.
“We were surprised when Doctor Bernetti apologized for the intrusion, but recommended that we take the girl back to the hospital. This first step saved her”, said the young woman’s relatives, speaking to the newspaper Il Resto del Carlino.
The doctor only considered that he did his “duty”.
