Mike Pence, former vice president of the United States, revealed on Friday night that he “will not support” Donald Trump’s candidacy for the November presidential election, against Democratic President Joe Biden.

A close ally of the former Republican President during practically his entire administration (2016-2020), Pence distanced himself from Trump when he opposed the certification of the results of the 2020 election, won by Biden, in a process that culminated in the invasion of the Capitol by supporters of the now Republican candidate for the White House.

Speaking to Fox News, Pence said that his position “should not come as a surprise” to anyone, considering what he defended when he himself was a candidate in the Republican Party primaries – he withdrew before the official start of the party’s internal votes.

Saying he is “incredibly proud” of the “conservative” agenda the Trump Administration has implemented, “making America more prosperous, safer and seeing [juízes] conservatives are appointed” to the country’s courts, namely the Supreme Court, the former vice president guarantees, however, that there are many differences between the two.

“I made it clear that there were profound differences between me and President Trump on a series of issues and not just our differences over my constitutional duties, which I exercised on January 6th,” he stated, specifically naming the differences over the “commitment to face the national debt” and in the “commitment to the sanctity of human life”.

According to several testimonies from former White House officials, made under oath, during the inquiry process in the House of Representatives into the invasion of the Capitol, the former President said that Pence deserved to be hanged for refusing to stop or delay the certification of the Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.

Mike Pence did not completely subscribe to the “electoral fraud” narrative promoted by Trump and his allies, rejected by dozens of US courts, and, as the country’s vice president and president of the Senate, he transmitted to Congress the results had been validated by the states.

During the attack on the Capitol, on the day of the election results certification ceremony, many Trump supporters shouted “hang Mike Pence”. During his campaign in the primaries, the target recalled that his life was in danger that day.

After the withdrawal of Nikki Haley, his last opponent in the Republican primaries – who also did not declare support for the former President’s candidacy –, Donald Trump collected enough delegates to be the Republican Party’s official competitor in the November vote, against the President, Joe Biden, who also secured the necessary delegates.

Asked on Fox News if his position on Trump means he will vote for the Democratic head of state, Pence replied: “I’m a Republican. How I will vote when the curtain closes…that’s up to me.”
