The son of the former president of Guinea-Bissau was sentenced to a prison sentence of more than six years in prison by a US court for leading an international drug trafficking network. According to the BBC, A. aimed to use the money raised through this scheme to orchestrate a coup d’état in the country in order to come to power.

The convict’s father, Malam Bacai Sanha, led the destinies of Guinea-Bissau between 2009 and 2012, when he died. His now convicted son is implicated in a failed coup attempt in February 2022. He was extradited to the US in August 2022, after being detained in Tanzania, and was being held in a prison in the State of Texas.

According to Deutsche Well, witnesses said that the man had been involved, for many years, in the international trafficking of cocaine, heroin, weapons and other goods. According to the German broadcaster, the son of the former ruler will have links to those responsible for the attack on the government palace where a meeting of the Council of Ministers was taking place, chaired by the head of state, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, on February 1, 2022.

At the same time, the President pointed the finger at those responsible for drug trafficking. “This coup also has the connivance of people who are being investigated as part of the fight against drug trafficking. Most of the people involved are on the investigation list for drug trafficking,” he said.
