Poland fires Eurocorps commander after counterintelligence probe

Dand according to a statement from the Polish Ministry of Defense, the intelligence services “launched a control investigation” into Lieutenant General Jaroslaw Gromadzinski’s access to confidential information, due to “new information about the officer”.

“As a result, the decision was taken to remove General Gromadzinski from his duties as commander of the Eurocorps and to immediately relocate him to his country,” the Ministry said, adding that another officer will be appointed to ensure continuity in the position held until now by general, and that this will be carried out “with immediate effect”.

Before becoming commander of the Eurocorps last June, General Gromadzinski was a coordinating advisor to the Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Army.

In recent months, the general was part of the international aid team for Ukraine stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany, where, together with US military personnel, he was responsible for training Ukrainian soldiers.

Created in 1992, Eurocorps is a unique army corps, made up of a thousand soldiers from six member countries, called “parent nations” (France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg and Poland), which finance and manage the organization.

Several “associated nations” (Greece, Turkey, Italy, Romania and Austria) also support Eurocorps by providing it with staff officers.

This body – whose mission is to lead and coordinate large-scale multinational operations on behalf of the European Union (EU) and NATO – can command up to 60,000 ground forces personnel.

The Eurocorps headquarters are located in Strasbourg.
