“A construction of fortifications continues in the Sumy region. I inspected trenches, shelters, firing, command and observation positions,” wrote Zelensky on social media, quoted by the French agency AFP.
The Ukrainian leader listened to reports presented by local commanders on the operational situation and interaction with neighboring units, according to the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform.
Zelensky also discussed with commanders the need for combat resources and assured that the country was strengthening its defenses.
Russian forces have intensified massive bombings against Ukraine after Kyiv forces launched a counteroffensive last summer with little success.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, triggering the most serious security crisis in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).
The number of civilian and military casualties from the conflict is unknown, but several sources, including the UN, have warned that it will be high.
