Former colonies: should Portugal repair the damage caused by the years of colonization?

-

In a week that marked the 25th anniversary of the 25th of April, a day that was celebrated in Lisbon with a crowd and at the CCB with a ceremony attended by all the presidents of the Portuguese-speaking countries, there was controversy over the President’s statements of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who brought to the debate the topic of possible reparations that may or may not be given to the so-called former colonies. This is a hotly debated topic in France, Germany, Belgium or the United Kingdom, but in Portugal it has almost never been addressed by official entities. The discussion is open and several parties gave their considerations on the topic in the Assembly of the Republic. The guests of this episode were Giuliana Miranda, journalist, João Pedro Marques, historian and columnist, Graça Fonseca, former minister of culture and Paulo Núncio, parliamentary leader of the CDS. The program was shown on SIC Notícias on April 26th.
