The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas asked the residents of Gaza for forgiveness for the suffering caused by the war for the first time, in a message published on Sunday night on Telegram.

Hamas “apologizes” for the difficulties caused by the war against the Israeli Army, which began almost six months ago. But it also reiterates the will to continue the fight that, in the movement’s opinion, will allow “victory and freedom” for the Palestinians.

The group sent a “message of thanks to the population” of the Gaza Strip, who are “exhausted”, the note admits.

In its message, Hamas highlighted the measures it wants to implement to improve the situation, such as trying to “control prices” during the conflict.

The group also stated that it is in contact with “all the components” of Gaza society, including other armed movements, popular committees and families, to try to “resolve the problems caused by the occupation”.

The humanitarian situation is catastrophic in the territory, already affected by an Israeli blockade imposed many years ago. Aid arrives in a trickle and the majority of the population is displaced in the south of the Strip, near Rafah, on the closed border with Egypt.

The war began on October 7, after Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israeli territory, when 1,160 people were murdered, according to an AFP report based on data released by Israeli authorities.

Islamist commandos also kidnapped more than 250 people and 130 remain held in Gaza, including 34 who were reportedly killed.

In response, Israel promised to “annihilate” Hamas and began a military campaign against the territory, which has caused more than 32,700 deaths to date, according to the most recent data released by the Hamas government.
