Heavy snowfall and very strong winds have led authorities to warn of the risk of avalanches in the Alpine regions of southern Switzerland

An avalanche in the Swiss ski resort of Zermatt swept away several people this Monday, the police of the Canton of Valais reported on the social network X (formerly Twitter). Authorities have already confirmed three dead and one injured.

“At the beginning of the night, there were three dead and one injured. The searches were suspended this evening.”, the note reads.

Heavy snowfall and very strong winds led authorities to warn of the risk of avalanches in the Alpine regions of southern Switzerland.

The danger was considered high in some areas of the cantons of Graubünden and Valais.

The Snow and Avalanche Research Institute (SLF) indicated today that “very large and, in some cases, extremely large spontaneous avalanches” are expected.

This winter, 14 people died in avalanches in Switzerland, slightly lower than the average of 17 deaths for the period ending in March.

Most of the victims were cross-country skiers.

The 14 deaths were recorded in 12 separate accidents, according to the provisional winter death toll published on March 27 by the SLF.
