ANDControversy broke out in Ghana, where a 63-year-old priest married a 12-year-old child, according to the BBC. The ceremony took place on Saturday and was attended by dozens of members of the Nungua community.
Videos and photographs of the event circulated on social media, leading to widespread criticism.
The British media chain explains that the minimum age for marriage in the African country is 18 years old and, despite the fact that the prevalence of child marriage has decreased, it still exists in the country.
During the event, the girl was advised to dress provocatively for her new husband and to use the perfumes that the guests offered her, to increase her ‘sex appeal’.
Now, she will have to go through a second ceremony, say Ghanaian media and the BBC, to prepare for life as a wife, including pregnancy. The leaders of the Nungua indigenous community, to which both the priest and the girl belong, condemned the public criticism, claiming that they come from “a place of ignorance”.
Father Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII is a ‘Gborbu Wulomo’, or traditional high priest of the indigenous Nungua community in Ghana’s capital, Accra, according to the BBC.
Critics called on the country’s authorities to dissolve the marriage and investigate Tsuru.
