MMore than 20 crew members remain trapped on board the ship involved in the collision with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, USA, a week after the accident. “They say they’re fine,” said the executive director of the Baltimore International Seafarers’ Center, a non-profit organization that protects seafarers’ rights.

In total, 21 crew members were on board the Dali when the ship collided with the bridge, last Tuesday. The shock occurred after a 27-day trip to Sri Lanka, according to the BBC.

The US Coast Guard confirmed that 20 of the crew are Indian, while one is from Sri Lanka. An Indian official said last week that all the crew were in good health, including the only one who was injured in the accident and had to be stitched.

The executive director of the Baltimore International Seafarers’ Center, Joshua Messick, is one of the few people who has contacted the crew. After an exchange of messages on WhatsApp, Joshua Messick revealed that the men are “shaken”. “They didn’t have Wi-Fi until Saturday and they didn’t really know what the rest of the world’s perception was,” he said.

Joshua Messick believes the crew has been advised by the company to “maintain a low profile for now.” Still, Messick says they stay in touch with the crew every day. “They say they’re fine,” he assured.

The date for the disembarkation of the ship’s sailors is still unknown. Authorities say it is unlikely that the Dali’s crew will disembark before the ship is removed from the site, a process that is considered complicated and expected to take time.

It is worth remembering that the collision between the ship and the bridge occurred last Tuesday, at 01:30 am (05:30 am in Lisbon), causing the infrastructure to collapse. North American authorities have already recognized that the reconstruction of the Baltimore bridge “will not be quick, easy or cheap” and highlighted the reopening of river traffic as a priority.
