A Governor of South Dakota and eventual Republican candidate for US vice president, Kristi Noem, 52, is facing criticism for sharing in her memoir a story describing how she killed her 14-year-old dog on the farm of the family.

Although the memoir, titled ‘No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward’, is only scheduled to be released on May 7, The Guardian had access to an excerpt, which details the story.

The article from that British newspaper, cited by Reuters, describes a section of Noem’s book, in which she says she shot the animal after deciding it was “dangerous” and “untrainable.”

According to her account, Noem stated that the dog ruined a hunting trip and then attacked a local family’s chickens, behaving like a “trained killer” who was “dangerous to anyone he was with.”

Noem took her gun and took the dog, called ‘Cricket’, to a quarry. At that location, he shot the animal dead. “It wasn’t a pleasant job, but it had to be done,” he described.

The story was met with condemnation online. “If you want officials who don’t brag about brutally killing their pets…vote Democrat,” the Democratic National Committee said.

Meghan McCain, daughter of 2008 Republican presidential candidate John McCain, said: “You can recover from a lot of things in politics, change the narrative, etc. – but not by killing a dog.”

Colleen O’Brien, senior director of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), condemned Noem’s decision to kill the dog, criticizing Noem for allowing “this rambunctious little dog to run wild with chickens and then punishing him in instead of training him or finding a more responsible guardian who would give him a suitable home.”

Noem, however, decided to defend herself against the negative criticism, making a post on the social network X. “We love animals, but difficult decisions like this happen all the time on a farm. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, we had to put down three horses that They were in our family for 25 years,” he wrote.

Noem served as her state’s only member of the House of Representatives for eight years before being elected the first female governor in 2018. Additionally, she is now part of a list of candidates being considered by Trump for vice president. who will compete with US President Joe Biden on November 5, Trump’s friends and allies revealed to Reuters.

Noem has already admitted that she could become Trump’s choice for the Republican ticket (the pair of candidates for president and vice president), claiming that “no one with any sense in the party will be able to refuse this invitation”, if he were to to happen.

For Trump, the figure of Kristi Noem (who has high levels of approval as governor in the state of South Dakota, in the southwest of the USA) brings him some relevant advantages, with her profile as a moderate Republican, a woman and with influence in several important sectors of society, particularly the powerful arms lobby.
