AUkrainian forces took control of the island of Nestryha, near Kherson, this Sunday, announced the commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi.

“In the direction of Kherson, our units managed to advance near the village of Veletenske and establish control over the island of Nestryha,” said Syrskyi, quoted by Espreso TV.

The island of Nestryha, mentioned by Syrskyi, is directly part of the islands of the Dnipro River delta and was long ago a “gray zone” – a no man’s land.

According to the commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Russian troops dropped 11 guided bombs on the right bank of the Kherson region on Sunday morning. Several educational institutions in several villages were damaged.

Ukraine has relied on financial and weapons aid from Western allies since Russia invaded the country on February 24, 2022.

Kyiv’s allies have also enacted sanctions against key sectors of the Russian economy to try to diminish Moscow’s ability to finance the war effort in Ukraine.

Already in the third year of war, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been faced with a lack of weapons and ammunition, despite repeated promises of help from Western allies.
