Two Ukrainian soldiers were killed on Saturday night in the town of Murnau am Staffelsee, in the German state of Bavaria, reported the media outlet Deutsche Welle. According to the German state police, the victims were aged 23 and 36, indicating that they had detained the main suspect, a 57-year-old Russian citizen.

According to the Ukrainian online newspaper Kyiv Independentthe Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the two men were Ukrainian soldiers, and local authorities, contacted by German state television Bayerische Rundfunk, also revealed that the two soldiers were living in accommodation for refugees, and were in the locality to obtain treatment from war injuries.

The reasons for the deaths are still unknown. Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann warned, in a statement to Bayerische Rundfunk, that there was “no convincing evidence” that the case was linked to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“There is testimony that the three involved had been seen together previously. There is evidence that they all consumed a lot of alcohol. All of this needs to be clarified”, stated the minister.
