A Pine Key Island, an uninhabited four-hectare paradise in Tampa Bay, Florida, United States, formerly known as Beer Can Island, is for sale for $14.2 million (around €13 million).

However, the island was not always a paradise. A group of four friends – Cole Weaver, James Wester, Russell Loomis and John Gadd – bought the island for around 64 thousand dollars (around 60 thousand euros) in 2017, when it started to become known, reports FOX 13 Tampa Bay .

The owners describe the vacant land, now valued at around €13 million, which dates back to the 1940s, as an “extraordinary retreat” encompassing “approximately four hectares of picturesque pine-covered highlands, together with approximately 24 hectares of bathing area”.

According to Loomis, when the group of friends purchased the island, they had a vision of creating “a park with amenities for adults.” After transforming it, the owners gave access to the island to people who wanted to enjoy the activities available. To have a selection, interested parties purchased a subscription and had access to a bar, a sand volleyball court and a huge inflatable slide.

The space was also the stage for festivals, weddings and concerts.

“We brought something fun and enjoyable to Tampa Bay, and I think it’s time for us to close the chapter and move on,” Weaver told the news station, revealing that while the oasis has attracted tourists, it has also brought problems.

A Hillsborough County commissioner has even expressed concern about access for first responders in case of emergency evacuations from the island, and the county itself has been pushing for it to become a private nature preserve rather than a private party venue.

According to Weaver, the future new owner can keep the island for personal use and build a house, or for business use. “This opportunity is extremely rare as Pine Key is one of the only privately owned islands in Tampa Bay,” she added.

“We are grateful for the great support we have received from the community and our members over the years, but all good things must come to an end at some point and, for us, that time is now”, he concluded.
